Shoto ryU KARATE JUTSU:
THE ORIGINAL OKINAWAN KARATE STYLE OF FUNAKOSHI AND GIMA
THE ORIGINAL ART OF SHOTO RYU
Shoto Ryu Karate Jutsu is an Okinawan Karate style that was formalised in Japan by Funakoshi Gichin and Gima Makoto in 1924.
The name reflects Funakoshi's nickname Shoto and may correctly be referred to as Shoto-ha Shorin Ryu since both Funakoshi and Gima were Shorin Ryu practitioners. This name is not used because Funakoshi Sensei considered his style also included the essence of Shorei Ryu.
Funakoshi Sensei was primarily a student of Shuri Te master Anko Azato and Shorin Ryu master Anko Itosu, whereas Gima Sensei studied under Itosu and Kentsu Yabu.
Masters Funakoshi and Gima cared little for modern sport Karate, nor for politics and organisations so it is ironic that it would be early students who would break away and form their own organisations. Wado Ryu founder Hironori Ohtsuka began in Shoto Ryu and a famous disagreement led to the formation of two organisations claiming to be the rightful heir of Funakoshi - they were Shotokan (Nakayama) and Shotokai (Egami).
